Get involved in our citizen science project today and collect your very own phages! Help us to develop an extensive phage biobank and learn more about these amazing viruses.

Phage Sampling

How to get involved with our phage sampling initiative:

STEP 1: Order a kit

Order a kit through the Phage Collection Project Portal.

STEP 2: Collect your sample

Collect a 50mL sample of water from your local environment or toilet!

STEP 3: Post your sample

Complete your sampling information sheet through the portal and post your sample back to our lab.

Once we have received your sample, we will isolate any phages that we find. If we find a phage in your sample, you will get the opportunity to name it!

Make sure to keep an eye on our social media channels and website once you send your sample to keep up to date on the research we conduct on your phages.

Any phages which the team isolate from the water sample you provide us with will be collected into the Phage Collection Project’s biobank. This biobank will aid scientific research into these viruses. Therapeutically relevant phages in the project’s biobank may also be used to produce phage therapies for use both within and outside of the UK. This commercial enterprise will be conducted in a non-profit manner, with all revenue resulting from the enterprise used to fund the administration costs of the Phage Collection Project only.

We take the Nagoya Protocol seriously and are fully committed to fair access and benefit-sharing. That means working responsibly and transparently with genetic resources, and ensuring benefits are shared with the communities and countries they come from.
